Managed Layer-2 Access Switch
Introduction
Layer 2 Access Switches transport bits based on
the MAC address between Customer Premises
Equipment and BRAS. Conventional Layer 2
Switches available today were designed keeping
in mind the enterprise networks for connecting desktops and servers and not for the way cable
operators are now using such switches to distribute triple play content to individual homes.
Xtera series of switches are designed specifically with features required at this point. Features
like multicasting, SNMP management, Spanning Tree, Port based VLANs all need modifications
for this type of deployment. Such modifications have been carried out in Xtera series.
